‘Dia de Los Muertos’ is one of the most ancient cultural traditions in Mexico and has been recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The two-day festival is a time for families to reflect on the lives of those who have died. It comes from the unique blend of ancient religious rituals that are native to Mexico, and the early European beliefs of Catholicism that were brought to the country by the Spanish. ‘Dia de Los Muertos’ takes the Catholic celebrations of ‘All Saints Day’ and ‘All Souls Day’ and marks the festivities in a uniquely Mexican way.
